Summer courses of polish language and culture

Students from all of the world can now take a part in a special summer school project made by Jagiellonian University this month.

This summer project is more than just a language course. It is an interactive program which includes lots of activities prepared for foreigners who want to have something in common with Poles. The program includes a courses like a Polish dance, cooking and acting.

“Students can learn Polish dances like Krakowiak, tied up with polish language” said Mr. Horbatowski the director of the program.The end of the course will be finished with the dance contest. Also idea of the cooking classes is to teach polish language and culture with the use of polish culture. “It is an academic program but we want students to have a form of relaxation”.

Schedule is simple. Starts at 8 am every day from monday to friday. Every day language instructions takes four to five hours. Afretnoons are reserved for the subjects connected with a polish culture such as – Poland post-Comounism, Jews in Poland, Polish film and art, Polish literature etc.

Thomas Sefrid is a Slavic Language Litereatures professor at the University of California. He is returning for the 6 time in Cracow specially because of the summer courses at the Jagiellonian University. He is fascinated like most of tourists with the charm of Cracow. Such a school can take Cracow tourism to another level.

Senior-friendly Krakow

Poland is more often perceived as the country of elderly people. Statistically every 100 people of working age take into account 52 pensioners. Especially old, overcrowded cities have noticed the problem of high development being inadequate to elderly people. Only in Krakow, 19% of all city residents are people in their 60s. That is 143,000 people. Mostly for that reason, Krakow (tours) has started the action “Place friendly to seniors”, which aims in raising the awareness of senior residents of Krakow and their social situation.

What is the purpose of event organized by the Malopolska Voivodeship and city of Krakow? The aim is to promote senior-friendly places where elderly people can feel good. Examples could be various, starting with cafes and restaurants in Krakow, up to cultural events, most of which are dominated by young and elderly people.

Having said that the main aim is to raise the awareness I meant the awareness of consumption sector of local industry. Seniors represent a significant percentage of customers, and soon may become the main clientele. This may affect various branches of industry, Krakow tourism as an example, which is of great importance nowadays. Seniors depends mainly on providing convenient transportation means, adequate prices and friendly atmosphere and tolerance, especially for the elderly in the city’s cafes, cafe bars and restaurants within Krakow.

Parents with little children often are met with the problem of going out for coffee together. Some Clubs or Cafes are not suited for children. Krakow, oh Krakow!

Tourism in Krakow has definitely became the most developing branch of local industry nowadays. Additionally it has changed the nature of that traditional city forever. One thing is that it became multicultural city lately, the other it made a considerable progress in developing the touristic sector in general. What is worth mentioning here, Krakow is no longer the limited to its must-see places, like famous Wawel Castle, Barbican, Old Town, Jewish District, but more often is proud of historical attractions, like Auschwitz or Schindler’s Factory. Its touristic offer spreads on attractions located near Cracow, such as Salt Mine Wieliczka tours or located a bit more far away Zakopane – so-called winter capital of Polnad.

Krakow tours could be seen as the best touristic destination all over the year, not only during summer holidays, especially when the Old Town seems rather overpopulated. Krakow is the city, where everyone finds something for themselves, the city that never sleeps, the city that meet you expectations. If you have not tried it yet, then you definitely should. Hawełka- legendary restaurant on the main market square

This place is truly legendary and unusual. Because it is in here where the prince of c.k monarchy, the King Of Greece, the Queen of the United Kingdom, president of the United States, also Lajkonik and Wawel Dragon who all love mutton had a chance to taste of the best quality food. Constantly since 1878 HAWEŁKA delights with the taste of the dishes, but also of the interiors. Sophisticated cuisine takes you in to the bliss mood and relax.

In Cracow’s traditional polish cuisine restaurant Hawełka you can feel like a nobleman. Speciality of the restaurant is an Old Polish Duck, with the boletus Cracow’s fit. Muschroom soup in a plate made of bread, made Hawełka restaurant famous for the world – it is worth to try this rarity.. You can easily recall an old times of the c.k. monarchy when tasting pepper stew with Vienna dumplings and a bit of a bear.

The walls are original and comes from the Young Poland decades .You can almost feel a look of a good Francis Joseph who was a guest of Hawełka in1851 roku. Second painting presentes Albrecht Hohenzollern who gives tribute to the Polish King Zygmunt stary. Colours are refined green, which relaxs and takes you in to the bliss mood. It makes a grate composition with the sophisticated food!

While visiting the restaurant in Krakow it is worth to step in to the confectionery, in which we prepared treats, according to the receptures of Master Hawełek, passed by generations. Confectionery exsists from the beguining of the restaurant, but only since 1998 we can enjoy the shop where Cracovian’s and tourists can taste the traditional treats.

Castle in Pieskowa Skała

The castle in Pieskowa Skała was an important link in the chain of fortification guarding the trade route, that led from Kraków to Silesia. It is one of the most beautiful examples of Polish Renaissance architecture. It is said to be haunted by a ghost of its 15th-century owner, Piotr Szafraniec, a knight who was beheaded for robbery…

The castle was first mentioned in the documents in 1315. In the 16th century it was rebuilt in Renaissance style by its owner at the time – Stanisław Szafraniec. The splendid Renaissance residence with the arcade courtyard and loggia dates back from this time.

Free admission day – Friday (except for holidays and days after holidays). On Fridays only one floor of the Style changes in the history of the European Art exhibition is accessible to the visitors. Other exhibitions remain closed.

Old power station will feed our minds with the work of Tadeusz Kantor

Not so far away from Wisła river, a new interactive museum is being made.

Cricoteka wich is center of documentation of the Tadeusz Kantor’s work will be placed in huge modern building just next to the Qubus Hotel. Frirst tourists, cracovians will enter the museum hopefully next year. Tadeusz Kantor a polish director, painter, stage designer, graphic and an author of many artistic manifests was a grate animator of the Kracow’s cultural life. In 1955 he founded “Cricot 2 theathre” in Cracow. The theathe wich was modern by using technics of constructivism as Kantor did, Dadaism, and informiel paiting. As a paiter he was silent since 1945 when socrealism came in to the polish life.

The new museum will circle an old XIX century building of Cracow’s power station. This building is lately used for the occasional events such as concerts and exhibitions. New cration is designed by group of few young and succesful architects Agnieszka Szultk, Piotr Nawara, Stanisław Deńko. People who made among others angel city, RMF complex near Alwernia. It is going to be futuristic point in map of Cracow’s tourism.

Cantors mission was to stimulate cultural life and Cricoteka is also made for that reason. It helps Krzysztofory gallery and preserve memory about cantors work in minds and imaginations of the next generations. It is a kind of a living monument which expend, change and create it selfe.

City breaks – a new form of relaxation

City breaks are trips to the cities mostly in Europe where tour operator organizing four days of sightseeing, shopping and entertainment. People in Poland begun to appreciate the short trips called city breaks. Such offers are often aimed at young people up to 35 years old who are working so hard that a few days trip to one of the big city in Europe is a big attraction.

City breaks are about having fun – not visiting museums and such thing. For young Poles there is no such significance that they will not spend holidays with the family, they will prefer to spend i.e. Halloween in some European capital.

Still the greatest interest of Poles is to enjoy the holiday months. Usually at the time of holidays websites with reservations and travel agents observe the most traffic. People that are choosing city breaks as a form of recreation are rather independent – they prefer to book flights and hotels on their own, without help of travel agencies.

Some weekends permanently stuck in the consciousness of Poles as the weekend for city breaks. Unfortunatlly the prices are twice as high in these weekends.

Salads and venison in Chimera Restaurant in Krakow

This is the first and the largest bar of this kind in Krakow. It is situated in the courtyard of an old tenement on Św. Anna Street. The courtyard is heated so it’s perfect for colder days when you want to eat something warm.
The kitchen serves various dishes both meat and vegetarian ones. Along the three-meter-long counter you’ll find a huge choice of salads, tarts, bakings and fresh juices. Depending on the season the menu changes e.g. During summer and spring you can get early vegetable or asparagus salads.

In summer you can get a taste of refreshing beverages made from mint leaves, melissa, nettle or Lithuanian cold borsch. Autumn is the time for a home-made plum cake, plum salad with herb or pumpkin soup. In winter you’ll get warm thanks to borsch with coulibiac.
First and foremost Chimera is a restaurant which serves exquisite Polish cuisine. You’ll fancy yourself as a true Polish nobleman while eating roasted duck, goose, lamb and venison. The restaurant serves a high quality, self-made cold meats. a t a special request the chef can prepare – prepared in one piece – lamb leg or gammon and roasted piglet.
The menu of the restaurant is updated depending on the season. In spring you can taste asparagus, crayfish and lamb roasted in various ways. Autumn and winter is the period of undergrowth, meaning mushrooms. During this time you may also choose out of different types of venison: wild boar, deers, hares or pheasant.
